Installing Upgrades Help
choose your region
Upgrading your computer can sometimes be a daunting and potentially troublesome task. This document provides tips to help you perform a successful upgrade.

Before You Start

Ensure you have a clear understanding of how the upgrade is to be installed.

Read the supplied instructions carefully and in full. Review any additional technical documents that the manufacturer may provide on their website and any additional AmigaKit Technical Documents. Familiarise yourself with the product and the procedure to perform the upgrade. If any questions arise at this point, ask our Technical staff for assistance and seek clarification on any further questions you may have.

Some upgrades require some undocumented prior technical knowledge, for instance when installing a chip, you may need to identify the orientation of pin 1.

If you feel at this point that you do not have the experience to continue with the upgrade, it may be better to request an experienced Technician to install the item for you.

Select A Suitable Work Area

Ensure you have adequate lighting and that the lighting conditions will not deteriorate during the upgrade procedure.

It is essential to select a workbench that can be protected against static electricity which can potentially damage most computer hardware. The work area should be free of clutter, have plenty of room for comfort, required tools, the computer hardware and containers to store screws and components during the procedure.

Identify Tools Required For The Upgrade

Different upgrade procedures require differing types of tools. The majority of tasks need an anti-static wrist strap which we can provide, although other specialist tools such as component extraction/insertion may be required. Using the correct length/size/type of screw driver for the task is important.

If you have not used the tool before, it will be necessary to familiarise yourself with its operation before undergoing the upgrade.

Upgrade Procedure

Ensure that the computer or peripherals are not powered up. Pay careful attention to any hazard or warning notices on the equipment.

Note the details and order that you disassemble the computer and carefully store screws and clips together.

Check that you are wearing an anti-static wrist band and that it is correctly installed so that it effectively discharges static electricity.

During the task, follow the upgrade steps methodically, checking and reviewing each step before going onto the next. Be careful not to displace or damage any adjacent components whilst you are focussing on installation of the upgrade.

The most common pitfalls of installing an upgrade which can lead to damage are:
Incorrect orientation- check key pins and motherboard print for guidance on orientation
Displaced pins- the upgrade's pins being pushed into the wrong sockets
Connection problems- the upgrade is not making a good enough connection due to dirty contacts or unsecure installation

If you encounter a problem, check back with the instructions and if necessary contact our Technical staff for assistance.
